“It’s time to shed; it’s time to soar.”

This illustration book project was inspired by one of the 24 Chinese Solar Terms -- 惊蛰(Jingzhe), representing the time when insects awaken from hibernation. The awakening of insects signals a rise in temperature and increased rainfall; the spring thunders are also noticeable during this time.

The first half of the story illustrated the life cycle of a cicada, but the story reads from its death to adulthood and to the metamorphosis.
The second half of the story illustrated a free and untrammeled life represented by the flying red-crowned crane and the growth of clematis.

This illustration showcases the passage of time through the changing seasons and daytime. The first stage of the story is sunset, and the story moves forward to the end, which is sunrise. These changes represent the cycle of life, from life to death, but also from death to life.
